Miles Wynn Cato
has over twenty years experience as the leading specialist dealer in historical and pre-contemporary Welsh art. A descendant of the Nanney-Wynns of Meirionnydd, his abiding interest in his Welsh ancestry prompted him to begin collecting Welsh art whilst reading history at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He subsequently worked for several London galleries including Dickinson, one of the worlds leading dealers in Old Master and Modern paintings. In 1995, he set up as a fully independent dealer.
Since the late 1980's Miles Wynn Cato has handled many important works by the leading Welsh artists of the 17th, 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, which have been sold to a wide range of Welsh individuals, collectors and museums. A vital parallel process has been the publication of a series of ground-breaking books (generally accompanied by exhibitions) on the painters and visual-culture of Wales, by the country's leading art-historian Peter Lord. In conjunction with other stimuli, such as the specialist auctions of Welsh paintings and antiques begun by Sotheby's in 1999, this long-neglected area of British art has begun to receive the attention it so richly deserves.
Miles Wynn Cato is constantly searching for the rare and often unidentified pictures that still occasionally come to light amidst the mass of pedestrian material on the market. With close private and trade contacts, he has established a broad private and institutional clientele, both in Wales and beyond. Furthermore, over the past three decades the gallery has built an unparalleled database of clients' particular interests, relating to artists, particular Welsh families or areas of the country, and new finds can be offered to those who register with the gallery as soon as they are located.
Whilst all aspects of Welsh art are covered, Miles Wynn Cato has a particular strength in pictures and artworks relating to Welsh country houses and estates. The gallery maintains an extensive ARCHIVE of such works and welcomes enquiries from researchers and institutions as well as private individuals.
In addition to Welsh art, the gallery also deals in a wide range of historical and decorative British pictures with a clientele based mainly in the U.K and the U.S.A
